UK citizens do not need visas to travel to Switzerland or any other Schengen country, however, you will need ETIAS, if you’re planning a trip in 2025 or onwards. The new European Travel Information and Authorisation System, or ETIAS, is a visa waiver scheme that is available to citizens of countries who are visa-exempt, like the UK, and will become mandatory for all eligible travellers from 2025. It is important to remember that the new ETIAS application does not take the place of the traditional visa system, which is a separate thing altogether. You will need to apply for a visa if you intend to work or study in France.
Yes. As the UK is a visa-free country, its citizens are eligible for ETIAS and it will be necessary for them to apply once it becomes mandatory in 2025. This only applies to those who plan to travel to Switzerland or any other Schengen country.
Yes, everyone under the age of 18 will also need ETIAS. From 2025, all travellers from ETIAS eligible countries (see our website for a full list) including minors, will need a valid ETIAS to enter the Schengen area. It has been decided that every individual, regardless of age, will need to have ETIAS linked to their passport when they travel to Europe, for security reasons, but also to help prevent the rising issue of human trafficking and keep track of the security status of the adult that is responsible for the child. For children and minors, a parent or legal guardian must complete the ETIAS application on their behalf.
ETIAS will go live in 2025, although the exact date is not yet confirmed. There will be a grace period of at least six months to help travellers and border officials adjust to the new regulations, after which ETIAS approval will be compulsory for all eligible visitors. Still, as ETIAS is partly intended to streamline the travel process, it is best to go ahead and fill out the ETIAS application form, even if you are travelling during the grace period.
